Harpers Ferry
Harpers Ferry West Virginia is a popular tourist destination within the state due to its historical significance. The town housed an arsenal that was the target of John Brown during his 1859 raid where he attempted to incite a slave revolt.
The raid proved unsuccessful as Brown and his men were defeated by a company of U.S. Marines overseen by Colonel Robert E. Lee.
After the war broke out the battlefield located above Harpers Ferry would become the site of the largest Union surrender of troops during the war. Confederate troops managed to take the poorly defended high ground surrounding the battlefield, move artillery into place, and carry out an effective bombardment of the Union camp and lines.
Today Harpers Ferry is a National Park dedicated to preserving the history of the town through a mix of living history, museums, and exhibits. They provide a shuttle service that takes you to different areas of historical note and a knowledgeable staff that can answer most questions without hesitation. The town itself is an unguided event where you can freely roam around from building to building enjoying all the historical exhibits, local dining, and gift shops.
If you plan to see the best views in the park you need to bring your hiking shoes as a trip to the 300ft cliff at the top of Maryland Heights means a long hike up an often steep and narrow trail to get there. If you're a photographer or just someone who likes amazing views this is a hike you'll want to make.
I really enjoyed my time at Harpers Ferry and I would recommend this destination to anyone who enjoys historical places, Civil War sites, beautiful vistas, railroad history, hiking, biking, tubing, or just relaxing in a small historic town.
